Irish in Australia
Irish Australians are the third largest ethnic group in Australia, after Australian and English. In the 2006 Census
1,803,741 residents claimed an Irish ancestry, however this figure does not include Australians with an Irish background who
chose to nominate themselves as 'Australian' or other ancestries. It is believed that up to 30 percent of the population claim
some degree of Irish ancestry and the 2006 Census recorded 72,050 residents who were born in Ireland.
