The 2006 census by Canada's official statistical office reported that the Irish were the 4th largest ethnic group with 4,354,155 Canadians having an Irish descendency. It is estimated that about 80% of Newfoundlanders have Irish ancestry, and with their strong cultural identity author Tim Pat Coogan once described Newfoundland as "the most Irish place in the world outside of Ireland".
